Get More From Your Fiber Connection
Your fiber connection helps keep your household connected to the people, services and experiences that matter. Explore ways to use your connection, improve Wi-Fi coverage, stream television and troubleshoot common issues.
What Can You Do With Fiber?
A reliable fiber connection provides the capacity to support many connected activities and devices throughout your home at the same time.
Work From Home
Stay connected to video meetings, cloud applications, file sharing and remote collaboration.
Learning & Education
Connect to virtual classrooms, online assignments, tutoring, college courses and educational resources.
Telehealth
Connect with healthcare providers through video appointments and access online health resources from home.
Streaming & Entertainment
Watch movies, television, music and live events on multiple connected devices.
Gaming
Support online multiplayer gaming, large downloads, updates and cloud-based gaming services.
Smart Homes
Connect security cameras, thermostats, speakers, doorbells, appliances and other smart devices.
Streaming TV Resources
Your NNCB fiber connection can support a wide variety of third-party television and video streaming services. Choose the services and programming that work best for your household.
Streaming Devices
Most newer Smart TVs include popular streaming apps. Older televisions can usually be connected using a separate streaming device.
Live TV & Local Channels
Several streaming providers offer packages with live television, sports and local broadcast stations. Channel availability varies by provider and location, so check the provider’s website using your ZIP code before subscribing.
Movies & On-Demand Entertainment
JustWatch can help you find which streaming service currently carries a particular movie or television program.
Streaming services, programming, channel lineups and subscription pricing are controlled by third-party providers and may change. NNCB does not provide or endorse any specific streaming service.
Whole-Home Wi-Fi
Fiber brings high-speed internet to your home. Your Wi-Fi router and home network determine how that connection is distributed wirelessly to phones, televisions, computers and other devices throughout your home.
Your NNCB Wi-Fi Router
NNCB offers an optional Nokia Beacon 3.1 Wi-Fi router at no additional monthly cost. The Beacon provides a good Wi-Fi solution for many households, but every home is different.
Home size, multiple floors, wall construction, router placement, interference and the number of connected devices can all affect wireless coverage.
When Should I Consider Mesh Wi-Fi?
A whole-home mesh Wi-Fi system uses multiple Wi-Fi access points placed throughout your home. The units work together as one wireless network and can improve coverage in areas that are difficult to reach with a single router.
A mesh system may be helpful if you have:
- A larger home
- Multiple floors
- A basement or detached living space
- Long distances between rooms
- Interior walls or construction materials that weaken Wi-Fi signals
- Areas with weak or inconsistent Wi-Fi coverage
- Many connected devices
- Security cameras or smart devices around the exterior of the home
Choosing a Mesh System
Common consumer mesh Wi-Fi systems include TP-Link Deco, Amazon Eero, Netgear Orbi and similar systems from other manufacturers.
NNCB does not require or endorse a specific brand. When purchasing your own system, choose equipment that supports your subscribed internet speed and provides appropriate coverage for your home.
Tips for Better Wi-Fi
- Place your router in a central, open location when possible.
- Avoid placing the router inside a cabinet or behind large objects.
- Keep the router away from large appliances, metal objects and sources of wireless interference when possible.
- Place mesh units according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection for stationary devices when practical.
Basic Internet Troubleshooting
Having trouble getting online? A few simple steps can resolve many common router and Wi-Fi issues.
Important: Do Not Access Your Fiber ONT
The Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is part of the fiber network infrastructure and should only be accessed, disconnected, reset or serviced by the PUD or an authorized broadband technician. Do not unplug, open, reset or otherwise make changes to the ONT. If you believe there may be an issue with the ONT, please contact NNCB Technical Support.
Check Your Router Connections
Make sure your Wi-Fi router is powered on and its cables are firmly connected.
The Ethernet cable providing your internet connection should be securely connected to the Internet or WAN port on your router.
Do not disconnect or make changes to the ONT.
Restart Your Wi-Fi Router
Restarting your router is often the best first step when your connection has stopped working.
- Unplug the power cable from your Wi-Fi router only.
- Wait approximately 30 seconds.
- Plug the router back in.
- Allow several minutes for the router to fully restart and reconnect.
Restarting your router allows it to reestablish its network connection and request or renew its DHCP lease.
Do not press the factory reset button unless NNCB Technical Support specifically instructs you to do so.
Check Another Device
If one phone, computer or television cannot connect, try another device. If other devices work normally, the issue may be isolated to the individual device rather than your internet connection.
Restart the affected device and reconnect it to your Wi-Fi network.
Try a Wired Connection
If possible, connect a computer directly to your Wi-Fi router with an Ethernet cable.
If the wired connection works well but wireless devices are slow or inconsistent, your fiber connection may be working normally and the issue may be related to Wi-Fi coverage inside your home.
Check Your Wi-Fi Coverage
If the problem occurs only in certain areas of your home, move closer to your router and test again.
Good performance near the router but weak performance farther away often indicates a Wi-Fi coverage issue. Router placement or a whole-home mesh Wi-Fi system may help.
